Arathakandankavu Temple
The Arathakandankavu temple in Edanad is believed to be very ancient. In 1950’s when the temple was in a state of destruction, the NSS Karayogam bought the temple from its trusteeship management, the Ponnarutta Madom. The renovations were done within 2 years. The legend is that the Bhagavan came here from the Omalloor temple. The Prathista was done in 1952. In 1966 the karayogam bought 40 cent land adjacent to the temple.
The ulsavam of the temple was held on the Rohini Nakshathram in the month of Meenam. The present mode of Ezhunnallathu began from 1964 onwards and in that year there were 5 elephants accompanying the procession. Previously the Jeevitha Ezhunnallathu was only from the NSS School to the temple which was accompanied by the Velakali. The Kavadiyattom starts from the Shasthamkoyikkal temple. There was a pond connected with the temple which was annihilated during the PWD road construction in 1990.
The temple was reconstructed. The Balalaya Prathishta was held in September 2005. The Kshetra Thantri Brahma Shri Paramboorillathu Neelakandan Bhattathiripadu laid the foundation stone of the Srikovil in November and the construction was completed according to the Vaastushastracharyan Brahma Shri Kanipayyur Krishnan Nampoothiri. The foundation stone of the Chuttambalam was laid by the temple Melshanthi Brahma Shri Thamaramangalathu Abhilash M Nampoothiri in June 2006.
The idols for the Prathishta set out from the Omalloor temple on April 27, 2008 and after visiting the neighboring temples reached Edanad. The Thanthrika Poojas were conducted from April 29th. On May 7, 2008 (1183 medam 24) Wednesday Rohini Nakshathram, the prathishta of the Shiva devan, sri Parvathi, Ganapathi and Subrahmanyan was consecrated by the Kshetra Thantri between 6.35 and 8.45 am. The Prathista of the Nagaraja, Nagayakshi, Yakshi, Rakshasu, Yogishwaran and Moorthi were also done. The foundation of the Kodimaram was laid and the Kshetra samarpanam was done by the NSS general secretary shri P.K Narayana Panickar.
The Kodimaram was the generous contribution of the Pravasi’s of Edanad. The Dwaja Prathishta and the 1st ulsavam after the reconstruction were held on the Rohini Nakshatram in the month of Medam on May 18, 2009.
